A Chair - Weaving At the start of this project, I knew I was going to make a chair due to having carpentry background. Drawing inspirations from traditional woodworking technique from the Philippines and Japan helped solve the no commercial glues requirements. In the Philippines, bamboo strips are weaved together to make wall panels which the locals call “Amakan.” With the different layers of the bamboo used, several patterns are created. “Kumiko” is traditional Japanese woodworking technique that uses thin strips of wood put together using no screws or nails. With these, several patterns are also created. I made a glue using leftover rice that was boiled and pureed in the blender. The interior of the chair is made of several interlocking cardboard and the outside is made of layers of cardboard glued together. On the outside, I made cuts to replicate Kumiko designs.
